Syllabus
Theory:
a) General explanation of the following musical terms: Naada, shruthi,
swara, vadi, samvadi, vivadi, anuvadi, sthayi, alankara, kaku, varjya,
vakra, upanga, bhashanga, raga classification (including oudava,
shadava)
b) Lakshanas of musical forms, geetam, jatiswaram, swarajathi, varnam,
kriti, keertana.
c) Raga lakshna in general; raga classification in detail.
d) Technical terms met with under practical study
e) The scheme of 72 melakartas, an introduction
f) The tala system: the theme of 35 talas. Jhampa tala and its varieities.
Shadangas and shodashangas and tala dasa pranas. Definition of matra,
gati, kriya, anga, graha, laya and other talas
g) Descriptions of main musical instruments: tanpura, veena, violin,
mrudanga, flute
h) Life and contribution of Carnatic Music Trinity
i) Biographies of Purandaradasa and Tyagaraja
j) 22 sruthis and voice culture points to be remembered by a vocalist
k) Classification of sapta talas and five jatis. Their names and constituent
angas. Jati bheda
l) Musical forms and their classifications
m) Raga lakshanas of Kalyani and Bhairavi
n) Essays:

Practical:
a) All swara exercises. Alankaras in Dhruva, Jhampa, Ata talas, janta
varsai, dhatu varsai, sapta tala alankaras.
b) Varnas in the first and second kalas in the following ragas – Kalyani,
Hamsadhwani, Todi, Vasanta, Madhyamavathi
c) The following kritis:

In the following ragas – Hamsadhwani, Sudha saveri,
Mayamalavagowla, Arabhi and Madhyamavathi

e) Simple raga alapana in the following ragas – Mohana,
Mayamalavagowla, Hamsadhwani, Hindola
f) Ragas to be covered – Sankarabharanam, Kalyani, Kambhoji, Todi,
Bhairavi, Kharaharapriya, Mukhari, Saveri, Anandabhairavi,
Kedaragowla, Dhanyasi, Bilahari, Mohana, Purvi Kalyani, Bilahari,
Pantuvarali, Shanmukhapriya, Simhendramadhyamam, Keeravani,
g) Pancharatna Kriti Natai, Singing of Ata Tala Varna in two speeds.
h) Non detail varnams atleast two must be rendered.
