BHUSHAN PART - 1 EXAM SYLLABUS

Theory:

a) Definition of the following:

Sangeetham, Naadam, Shruti, Laya, Swarasthaanam,

Arohanam, Avarohanam, Sthaayi, Purvaangam, Uttaraangam

Swaram notation-Deergha, Hraswa, karvai, Swara and Taala Symbols,

Swaravali/Sarali Swaras, Janta swaras, Alankaarams, Daatu swaras, Hecchu sthaayi swaras, Dhaatu- Maathu, Thaalam, Kaalam

b) Janaka and Janya ragas

Oudava, Shadava, Sampurna ragas

Names of the melakarta ragas of the first six chakras

c) Raaga Lakshanas (Description of the ragas under study with their salient

features) Mohana, Kalyani, Goula, Sankarabharanam, Sriranjani, Kambhoji

d) 16 swaras and their technical terms

e) Instruments, their varieities, classifications, development etc.

f) Instrumental/vocal difference

g) Scheme of 72 melas - Application of katapayaadi sankhya

h) Form in Carnatic music – Geetham, Swarajathi, Krithi, Keerthana, Thillaana,

Padam, Jaavali etc.

i) Thaalam – Aavartam, Aksharakaala, Laghu, Dhrutam, Kaalam, Thaalam

Knowledge of the taalas prescribed under pratical study

j) Essay –

I) Music as one of the fine arts

II) The place of music in life

Practical:

a) Prescribed raagas

b) Swaravalis in the three main sthaayis in

c) Alankaarams in Tisra Eka, Chaturasra Rupaka, Aadi, Triputa and Matya Taalas

in the prescribed ragas and to be rendered in the first and second kaalams

d) Ability to recognise raagas through particular groups of swaras

e) Sight singing: Todi, Shahana, Saveri, Nerakurunji

f) Atleast two geethams to be mastered from the following:

g) Singing of varnams in two speeds that were learnt in the previous year

h) Varnas in Mohana, Sankarabharanam and Abhogi (Adi taalam first kala

only)
